Great Egret. A large white heron, the Great Egret is found across much of the world, from southern Canada southward to Argentina, and in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Found near marshes and bays, it's primary food source is fish. It can be observed stalking fish ("fishing") and can be observed roosting in trees. Nests are on the ground in mounds and there is fierce competition among the chicks, leading to weaker nest mates being killed by siblings. They are long-lived (up to 23 years).

  • Downy Woodpecker. The active little Downy Woodpecker is a familiar sight at backyard feeders and in parks and woodlots, where it joins flocks of chickadees and nuthatches, barely outsizing them. An often acrobatic forager, this black-and-white woodpecker is at home on tiny branches or balancing on slender plant galls, sycamore seed balls, and suet feeders. Downies and their larger lookalike, the Hairy Woodpecker, are one of the first identification challenges that beginning bird watchers master.
  • Ruby-throated Hummingbird. the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is eastern North America’s sole breeding hummingbird. These brilliant, tiny, precision-flying creatures have a greenish body and red "throat" that glitter like jewels in the full sun. Feeders and flower gardens are great ways to attract these birds. In early fall they’re bound for Central America, with many crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight.

  • Snowy Egret. A small, active white heron, the Snowy Egret is found in small ponds as well as along the ocean shore. Its black legs and yellow feet quickly identify it.

  • Great Blue Heron ("Fishing") The largest and most widespread heron in North America, the Great Blue Heron can be found along the ocean shore, bays, lakes, streams or the edge of ponds. Although the Great Blue Heron eats primarily fish, it is adaptable and willing to eat other animals as well. Several studies have found that voles (mice) were a very important part of the diet, making up nearly half of what was fed to nestlings in Idaho. Occasionally a heron will choke to death trying to eat a fish that is too large to swallow. Great Blue Herons congregate at fish hatcheries, creating potential problems for the fish farmers. A study found that herons ate mostly diseased fish that would have died shortly anyway.

  • Peek-a-boo! Deer in Tall Grass:
  • Red Fox. The largest of the true foxes, they are the most geographically spread member of the Carnivora, being distributed across the entire northern hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, Central America, and the steppes of Asia. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australasia, where it is considered harmful to native mammal and bird populations. Red fox primarily feeds on small rodents, though it may also target leporids (rabbits & hares), game birds, reptiles and invertebrates.
